Honorable Mention
As I Contemplate Solitude
Don Schaeffer

The inside was always warm
and full of happy visions
but the outside
had me fearing abandonment
when I was young.

I suppose that's
how it is in my family,
the cold looms
just beyond the warmth.

Now that my family
is a shadow, the cold
seeps into buildings
that are supposed to protect me,
now as I contemplate solitude.

From the world of the fearful
I watched a woman
stand like a taut string,
as the outside whirled around her,
chewing gum, repelling all the sad spirits.
I watched her longingly.
She must have been
the favorite of her dad.
